FF/FL Floor Flatness & Levelness Testing

Dipstick

FF/FL Floor Flatness & Levelness Testing

(ASTM E1155 • CSA A23.1 Compliance)FF/FL testing is the industry-standard method used to evaluate the flatness (FF) and levelness (FL) of newly poured or existing concrete floors. It is required in most commercial and industrial construction projects to ensure that floors meet the performance criteria specified by engineers, architects, and building codes.

Why FF/FL Matters

  • Ensures the slab meets construction specifications

  • Reduces uneven surfaces that can affect equipment or racking

  • Helps prevent issues with forklifts, pallet jacks, and rolling equipment

  • Identifies areas needing grinding or correction before handover

How It Works

FF/FL values are collected using measurements taken along multiple test lines across the slab.

  • Flatness (FF): Measures surface smoothness — how much the floor varies over short distances.

  • Levelness (FL): Measures the overall slope — how much the floor deviates over longer distances.

Standards & Compliance

  • ASTM E1155 defines the testing procedures and calculation of FF/FL numbers.

  • CSA A23.1 (Canada) requires that concrete slabs in industrial and commercial buildings be tested and meet the specified FF/FL tolerances.

  • Testing is mandatory for many slab-on-grade, warehouse, and large commercial projects.

All testing performed by TrueFlat Testing follows CSA A23.1 requirements and the official ASTM E1155 methodology.

F-min Testing for VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) Warehouses

Profileograph

(ASTM E1155 • CSA A23.1 Compliance for Defined-Traffic Floors)F-min testing is a more precise form of floor evaluation used specifically for VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) warehouse environments where high-reach forklifts operate along fixed wheel paths.
This testing is essential for ensuring safety and stability in high-bay racking systems.

Why F-min Is Needed

VNA forklifts operate on a fixed track, meaning even small irregularities in the floor can cause:

  • Operator vibration and safety risks

  • Reduced forklift speed

  • Increased maintenance costs

  • Damage to racking or inventory

  • Poor performance of AGVs or robotic systems

F-min ensures the aisle floor is smooth enough for forklifts to travel safely at their designed speeds.

How It Works

  • Measurements are taken along each forklift wheel path (left and right).

  • Results are compared to the F-min tolerances specified by the equipment manufacturer (e.g., F-min 50, F-min 75).

  • The higher the F-min number, the tighter the tolerance and smoother the floor.

Standards & Compliance

  • Although F-min is not described in CSA A23.1, the standard requires compliance with defined-traffic specifications, which F-min fulfills.

  • All floor measurement procedures follow ASTM E1155, adapted for defined-traffic aisles.

  • Many racking installers and equipment suppliers require a passing F-min report before commissioning.

TrueFlat Testing performs all F-min surveys using industry-approved procedures aligned with CSA A23.1 and ASTM E1155 requirements for defined-traffic floors.
